Life at Lyndhurst House

Lyndhurst House School, one of the famous Hampstead Willett houses History and Premises

Lyndhurst House was founded by Vernon Davies in 1952 and remains in the same handsome Grade II listed four-storey Victorian building - one of the famous Hampstead Willett houses. The building is generously proportioned, with full facilities and a modern gym extension.

The accommodation is spread over four storeys. In addition to the classrooms, which are light with high ceilings, we have a Gym/Assembly Hall, Art Room, Science Laboratory, and our own large walled playground.

The School Year

The academic year runs from September to July and is divided into three terms: Autumn, Spring and Summer. Half-term lasts for a week. Holidays last approximately three and a half weeks at Christmas and Easter, and a generous eight and a half weeks in the Summer.

There is a School Assembly every morning. Though brief, this is an important part of the school day, emphasising the community of the School as a whole. The Assembly provides a regular opportunity to give positive praise to boys for their many successes and efforts. It is also a useful time to illustrate examples of sound values and good conduct, as well as the warm good humour and courtesy that permeates the School. Pupils are frequently involved in part of the day's Assembly.

The School Day

The playground at the rear of Lyndhurst House School The doors open at 8.20 am, and our boys are in their classrooms by 8.50 pm for Registration. For the first two years, the day finishes at 3.25 pm. For the rest of the school, the day finishes at 4.00 pm. On Monday and Wednesday the boys go to playing fields for games and are back at School at 3.30 pm, or 4.30 pm for the older boys. Parents can, by prior arrangement, collect from the playing fields on games days if they wish. The Junior forms have three playtimes - mid-morning, after lunch, and mid-afternoon. Senior forms have two breaks.

Proper cooked lunches are provided for all boys. Our own catering staff cook and prepare the meals in our own kitchens. There is no provision for bringing packed lunches, but a non-meat menu is available for boys who prefer this. Special dietary requirements for medical reasons can normally be catered for, and but must be notified to the School in advance. Our menus are designed to appeal to growing boys with hearty appetites, and we do our best to ensure that what we offer is what the boys enjoy eating as well as what is good for them.

Two happy Lyndhurst House boys Boys can join a variety of after-school clubs or activities, usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays, generally until 5 pm. Junior French, Art and Drama Clubs are offered in this way, and the Chess Club meets during the day.

For the older boys, the last class of the day is Prep., during which boys can start work on their homework in supervised conditions.

Younger boys whose day ends at 3.25 pm can be supervised until 4.00 pm for late collection, if this is convenient to parents - especially those with an older boy at the School.

Staffing

The School's dedicated team of staff includes Classroom Teachers for the younger boys, and the Specialist Subject Teachers. In this way, the School's academic and pastoral needs are fully provided for. Provision is also made within the staff for some individual help, should this at times be appropriate.

Houses

We have a house system - Drake, Grenville and Hawkins. This provides for teams at all levels for friendly rivalry and competition in sports and other activities. House points are awarded for work and also for out-of-class events.
